Letter from God: A Transformative Therapeutic Exercise

God called David a man after God’s own heart, and David is by far the greatest poet in scripture and the most prolific lamenter. Following his footsteps, Christian counselors often assign creative writing prompts that can give voice to our souls’ deepest longings and allow us to wrestle with fraught emotional/spiritual questions.

One client I was working with was grappling with questions of worthiness, lovability, and identity. These longings are heartbreakingly common. But he agreed to explore this prompt with God: Write a love letter from God’s perspective toward you. Here’s what he wrote, which he graciously agreed to share for the benefit of others. I hope it blesses you as it did me.

Writing in a journal

My child,

You have spent much of your life wondering if you are enough, or somehow outside the reach of My affection. But there has never been a single day when My eyes were not upon you with compassion.

When my Son walked among humanity, He called them by name before He called them to follow Him. This is how I look at you. I know the loneliness you've carried, I have collected every tear you thought no one noticed, I was in every moment you felt forgotten.

Your loneliness, your questions, your temptations — they are not proof I have abandoned you. Nothing can separate you from My love. Bring Me your confusion, your desires, your fears. Bring Me the parts of yourself you are afraid to let anyone see. I am not intimidated by your honesty.

Do not build your identity on your attractions, your achievements, your failures, or even on your loneliness. Build it on the fact that you are Mine. You long to be chosen. Your desires for love, for communion, for home — they all find their deepest and truest fulfillment in Me.

There are people I am preparing who will know you, encourage you, laugh with you, pray with you, and lift you up when you are down. You are not destined to carry your burdens alone. Keep following Me one day at a time. When you stumble, run to Me. When you doubt, bring it to Me. When you feel lonely, remember that I am nearer than your own breath.

My Son stretched out His hands on the cross knowing every part of your story. He did not hesitate. He did not change His mind. He saw you and still chose to give Himself to you. So rest. Not because every question has been answered, but because you are held by the One who will never let you go.

Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. I have always been with you. I am with you today, and I will be with you tomorrow.

With everlasting love,

Your Father
